Data & GIS Manager

Job Level: Medior or Senior, depending on experience

Based: Joubertina (Eastern Cape) or remote with occasional travel to Eastern Cape

Duration: Freelance or fixed term.

Living Lands is a dynamic organization based in the Eastern Cape. We aim to regenerate agricultural landscapes and address the challenges of land degradation by supporting those who actively care for the land. We work across disciplines, approaching our work with humility and flexibility.

Our approach is based on the belief that building resilience within agricultural communities in the face of a changing climate is vital. We provide practical assistance to farmers, enable large-scale ecological rehabilitation and bridge the gap between theory-and-practice at the interface between agriculture and ecology. Through our partnership with the Baviaanskloof Bewarea, we implement large-scale ecological rehabilitation interventions and require support with data capture and data analysis related to this work.

We are looking for a Data & GIS Manager to join our team to support work. The ideal candidate will
support the landscape teams by taking on the following responsibilities:

  • Quantitative and qualitative data management (N.B. the majority of the data is quantitative field data and spatial data; however, we do also work with/collect qualitative data)

  • Spatial data management

  • Map creation

  • Data analysis (to support the Evaluation part of M&E)

  • Spatial analysis and modelling

  • Oversight and management of all landscape data to support monitoring and evaluation

  • Continuous improvement of data management process and procedures

  • Assistance with experimental design and data analysis

  • Support other tasks beyond data management e.g. report writing

We value flexibility highly and depending on the candidate, we are open to a permanent appointment (part-time or full-time) or contract with a freelancer. The ideal Data & GIS Manager candidate will meet the following minimum requirements:

  • A self-starter with ‘can-do’ attitude (not looking for a standard 9-to-5: works well both in a team and independently).

  •  3-5 years practical experience in GIS and/or data management

  • MSc, BSc (Hons) or Advanced Diploma in Ecology/Geography/Geoinformatics or similar discipline.

  • Demonstratable skills in various GIS and database packages.

  • Python and R-Studio experience is a plus.

  • Demonstrated computer literacy in MS Office, such as Excel and Word with strong writing skills.

  • Experience in agricultural or ecological experimental design will be beneficial

  • Willingness to relocate to a remote location or willingness to travel if working remotely

  • Driver’s license is a plus.

Please highlight in your application if you have any of the following:

  • GIS and spatial data production and management and/or AI (particularly those interested in innovative tech solutions)

  • Prior experience in project management

  • Data analysis, data processing and data management

  • Local knowledge of Baviaanskloof/Langkloof/Somerset West/Karoo

  • Practical experience of ecological rehabilitation, fire management, agronomy, livestock management and/or farm management
